*LOS ANGELES, CA -– The Los Angeles Black College Expo  (BCE), presented by the National College Resources Foundation (NCRF) was held Saturday February 10, 2018 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and you could feel the energy the moment you entered the arena.

Wall to wall more than  15,000 attended this cultural, academic and truly inspirational experience.  Numerous high school students and college transfer students were accepted to colleges and universities right on the spot! Over $30 million in scholarships were awarded.

The expo & it’s Power of Me Tour are also headed to Oakland, Maryland, New York, Houston and Atlanta.  The BCE reports historical highs in the numbers of on-the-spot college acceptances and college recruiters shared that the 2018 BCE was one of their best college fairs ever.

The Black College Expo Los Angeles featured over 200 colleges and universities, of which more than three-dozen of the colleges represented were HBCU’s.  You name it, and they were there: Dillard, Tuskegee, Howard, Harvard and even the Musicians Institute of Los Angeles.  “Black College Expo has helped increase our enrollment by 40 percent,” says Dr. Dwuan Warmack of Harris Stowe State University.

Throughout the day students and parents took advantage of the many seminars and workshops offered.  Music Mogul Manager and Businessman, Dr. Mathew Knowles hosted one of the most sought after workshops of the day, “How to Get Into the Entertainment Business.”  Both sessions were over capacity with standing room only. Knowles captivated listeners with his thorough knowledge of the entertainment business.  Entranced by a wealth of information, no one wanted to leave. The second session went nearly an hour into overtime.

Other exciting seminars and workshops full to capacity include, “Boomin Careers,” featuring other celebrities and VIP guests, like star from Black Ink Crew Katrina “Kat Tat” Jackson, and Kimberly Anyadike, the youngest black female pilot to fly a plane across the United States,” Hip Hop Legend YoYo’s workshop on “How to Get an A in English” using hip hop concepts and a Financial Literacy workshop presented by Ed Alston and Damon Wilson of LA’s Parkside Economic Development Corporation.

A most inspiring aesthetic feature of the expo was the display of noted and historic college grads that listed their places of study: Spike Lee (Moorehouse), Langston Hughues (Lincoln University), Common (Florida A&M), Teraji P. Henson (Howard) and many more.

Common is proudly depicted among many HBCU grads on display during the Black College Expo 2018.

The event concluded with an exciting step show and scholarship presentation hosted by BET’s The Westbrooks. Special celebrity guests taking the stage to present scholarships included stars of the hit television show “Queen Sugar” on OWN, Kofie Siriboe and Bianca Lawson, Nickelodeon’s Kel Mitchell, Wendell James of Raising Whitley on OWN, Dawnn Lewis formerly of “A Different World,” Power 106 & KDAY’s Cece The Mamacita, and even President and CEO of the Urban League, Michael Lawson. The after show also featured a surprise appearance by recording artist and dancer Silentó (The Nae Nae Song).  To support the Black College Expo, donations can be made at TheCollegeExpo.org or by purchasing a tee shirt or other clothing with a purpose at:  https://www.thecollegeexpo.org/shop

About the Black College Expo TM

The Black College Expo TM (BCE) is a program of the National College Resources Foundation (NCRF), a 501c3 non-profit organization that functions daily as a full service student outreach program. In 1999, Dr. Theresa Price founded the BCE as a vital link between minorities and college admissions.

NCRF’s mission is to curtail high school dropout rates and increase degree and/or certificate enrollment among underserved and underrepresented minority students by providing them mentoring and tutoring with access to college, careers and beyond. The BCE tour currently has a presence in Los Angeles, Oakland, New York, Houston, Miami, Washington, D.C./Maryland and Atlanta.

Each year, the BCE’s, tour hosts more than 50 of the 104 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) along with other higher-learning institutions and educational services providers. The expo is also used as a platform to introduce and educate students about HBCUs and the college admission process. In addition, the BCE attracts public and private colleges and institutions, Ivy League schools and some military colleges. The overall goal is to encourage and promote the importance of obtaining a higher education, while providing positive guidance and pathways toward positive post-secondary pursuits for students from underserved, underrepresented, at-risk and low-resource communities.
